All SCHS students are welcome to join Educare and Coach Smith after school daily in room 65 to use Esports resources. If you want to play ANY game, ask Smith!
SCHS students can enroll in official CIF leagues for afterschool matches every week. Major scholarships and CV opportunities await. Afterschool tournaments co-hosted at LAMC are opportunities for Spartan alumni to compete against new gen Spartans.
SCHS students enrolled in the LAUSD CTE Esports 1A course taught by Smith will have hands on experiences with modern tech equipment, software, communications, and become well versed in industry history and standards. Many of our alumni leverage these skills at a host of prestigious UCs! (4 UC in this pic alone)
Sylmar Spartans must dedicate time, focus, and a commitment to bettering their craft if they want to succeed in Esports. In many of these games, Esports competitors go 1 on 1, 3 on 3, or 5 on 5 to coordinate their play and best the other school's players. $51,000* in scholarships is at stake in the Fall 2026 season! While Esports are not as inherently physical, the mental taskload is similar to all other sports. As many athletes can attest (like golfers), the brain is the most taxed part of the body! Spartans can enroll in the following titles via PlayVS. Participation in at least 1 title is REQUIRED for the CTE course. All eligible titles + Fall 2026 schedule listed below:
Marvel Rivals @ Thursday 4pm
Street Fighter 6 @ Tuesday 4pm
Smash @ Wednesday 4pm
Valorant @ Wednesday 4pm
Smash Ultimate vs Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland)
Rocket League vs Capistrano Valley HS (Mission Viejo)

Coach Smith spends most of his time outside of SCHS with his wife Suzette, their sons Jonah (6), Julian (1) and collie Huckleberry. Smith grew up playing games and hacking his consoles; you can check out his favorite games of all time here.
"I have been blessed to have some cool and ambitious students that put their Spartan pride to work in my digital classroom. Alumni of the program have come on to careers in the industry as well as advisory roles within the program at LAMC and Educare SCHS. If you are interested in some of our previous community events, like our build-a-pc events, the local afterschool tournaments, the Levelup LA Minecraft event or any of our other sponsered activities, click HERE!" - Coach Smith
